Employing staff can be one of the most difficult aspects of running a business, making it very important to get correct the first time. This page will cover some of the basics of employing staff that we can help you with.
Before you Start
Do you know what award your staff are covered by? This document will determine minimum conditions such as pay rates, hours of work and other entitlements.
Will you provide employees with a contract?
Do you have workers compensation insurance? This insurance will cover you if your employee is injured at work. Insurance is a legal requirement if you are employing and there are fines if you do not have a policy.
Are you registered for PAYG withholding tax? This allows you to withhold tax and report it to the ATO.
Do you have accounting software to record and report wages? The software will need to do the following:
Calculate the wages, tax and super based on information input.
Report Single Touch Payroll (STP) information to the ATO.
Generate payslips to be provided to employees within 1 business day of payment.
Finalise your end of financial year figures so employees can do their tax return.
Reports on the figures so you can prepare your business activity statement (BAS)
Do you know how to calculate and pay super?
How will you record time sheets, breaks and leave?
How often will you pay your staff?
